Not being interested in booking session portrait work makes — to my eye — for a more interesting and spontaneous capture. I love uneven lighting and the creativity required by real life. My own interpretation of my work lies somewhere between the realms of street and nature, portrait and lifestyle. The art of photography is the art of love. Love of light, and of life’s moments. Photography has the ability, given the right combination of skill, intuition, and dedication, to express emotions far and deep and to enhance the senses. Sometimes I swear I can smell a hint of what is on the other side of the lens, and taste the air around it. For me, photography is an imitation of hyper‐life, magnified life yet, at the same time, unnoticed and underappreciated segments of life that warrant notice.
High contrast light scenes are a huge inspiration for me. They seem perfectly suited for today’s highly polarized society and make for great juxtapositions (and parallels) relating to various political, ideological, and religious perspectives. Somehow, even when the scene shot is of a leaf, there can be an air of controversy or debate about it. The high keys and low keys playing off each other in a way as to hint at something greater, more important, urgent.
Though not all, the vast majority of my shots are analog, made on actual film which, for me, allows for more attention as well as more error. Each frame gives me one less frame to use before having to reload. Whether it be a medium format manual focus, an old waist‐level TLR, a toy point‐and‐shoot, or a high‐end SLR, using film is a meditation on chance, luck, experience, surprise, and hope. Not being able to see the results of my effort immediately gives me distance from it, which allows for me to either remember the moment, or re-envision it with fresh eyes.
I hope you like a few of the shots I’ve made (and made available here), and that they reverberate with you. Thanks for looking.
